About YPMP
The YPMP Story
In 2020, during the height of COVID-19 lockdown, young professionals and students used social media to reach out to Agnes Igoye seeking guidance and mentorship as they struggled to navigate the effects of COVID-19. As the numbers grew, Agnes responded by sending out a message on Facebook inviting anyone in need of mentorship to send Her a one-page message explaining why mentorship was needed, and thus that marked the birth of the Young Professional Mentorship Program (YPMP). The first cohort of 23 mentees from Kenya, Mali, South Sudan, and Uganda began their free one-year mentorship journey via Zoom on August 16th, 2020. In a mix of zoom sessions, global guest speakers, and educational volunteer activities, Class of 2020 excelled, achieving goals beyond what they set for themselves. During their graduation ceremony, they resolved to pass on the opportunity to other young people to help them rethink, refocus, and succeed.
The second class of 2023 attracted 50 mentees from Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe, who were selected from a large pool of applicants.
YPMP is a non-governmental organization founded by young professionals seeking to fast-track their acquisition of managerial and leadership skills through mentorship. With the current turbulent times, many professionals are faced with tough decisions and therefore require support in navigating the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and other changes in the work environment.
Members of the program meet weekly, both physically and virtually through online platforms such as Zoom, and engage with different young professionals to share their experiences. They receive guidance and support from their seniors, mentors, and patron in reaching a way forward.
The program is inclusive, welcoming members from various professional backgrounds, including lawyers, accountants, bankers, engineers, medical practitioners, journalists, marketers, academicians, university students, and others. Upon joining YPMP, members undergo several mentorship programs, working individually with the chief mentor or one of the assigned mentors.
